She earned her bachelors degree from the University of Georgia and her masters from Georgia State University. She was married to James E. Spence Jr. and they lived in Brookhaven where they raised two daughters. As a mother she was deeply involved in her childrens upbringing and loved sharing experiences with them often taking them to ballets museums and concerts. In her professional capacity Susan was a licensed professional counselor who devoted her career to helping others. She worked for the state in several capacities including at the DeKalb County Mental Health Center before entering private practice where she cared for her clients until 2018. She was born Rosalind Rich in New York on April 24 1939 the daughter of Katherine Rosenheim Rieser and Dr. Charles Ely Rieser and was the greatgreat granddaughter of Morris Rich one of the founders of Richs Department Store in Atlanta. After moving to Atlanta at a young age Rosalind attended Little Lovett preschool and graduated from Christ the King High School in 1957. While in high school Rosalind danced in the senior company of the Atlanta Civic Ballet which would later become the Atlanta Ballet.
