Coach Richard S. Chumley, age 78, of Dalton, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Hamilton Medical Center.Coach Chumley was most revered as the very first head baseball coach for Northwest Whitfield High School. He built and led the Northwest Bruins Baseball program with pride, discipline, and passion for 27 incredible seasons. Over his illustrious career, he amassed an impressive 368-295 record before retiring from coaching in 2002, was named Dalton Daily Citizen coach of the year several times and earned his place among Georgia's coaching elite during the Georgia Dugout Club's annual Hall of Fame ceremony in January 2008.Richard was preceded in death by his father, D.O. Chumley.He is survived by his wife Ann Chumley of Cohutta; daughter, Ashley Chumley of Chattanooga; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard A.
