Bauer, 83, of Altamont, died at 1:00 a.m., Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Effingham.A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Altamont with Rev. Ron Lorilla officiating. Burial will follow at St. Clare Cemetery, Altamont with military rites by Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger V.F.W. Post #7676, Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post #512, and Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard. A visitation will be held two hours prior to service time on Tuesday at Gieseking Funeral Home. He married Margaret J. Leininger on February 14, 1976 and she preceded him in death on May 24, 2025. He was retired from Statewide Tire, Vandalia. Steve was a simple man. You could most often find him in his chair watching TV, whether it be a sporting event, a western or NCIS. He loved to sit around the fire visiting with friends drinking beer or a homemade beverage.
