His granddaddy Willl "Pap" Perkins was his biggest spiritual influencer and he was saved November 13 1954 at age 17 and joined Cedar Cross Missionary Baptist Church. He remained a life long member and was ordained a deacon in 1971 and remained a deacon until his death and served as cemetery caretaker until recent years. He was a founding board member and firefighter for Cedar Springs 1 Fire Department member of the Allen County Cattlemans Association and Southern Kentucky Antique Tractor Pullers.
