Her parents George T. and Dorothy M. Boyle Richmond raised her and brother George in the area surrounding Manhattan in Manhasset Oyster Bay and Long Island. She attended St. Mary Manhasset and graduated from St. Dominic High School. She entered the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monroe and received the religious name Sister Mary Roberta. She was educated at Marygrove College Detroit where she earned both a bachelors and masters degree. Her ministry of formal education began in Detroit at All Saints St. Catherine St. Mary of Redford Mother of Our Savior Our Lady of Good Counsel and St. Raymond. After school Ryan worked in construction for many years including going out to California for a couple of years. In his free time he enjoyed being outside while fishing in nearby waterways. She married Dennis T. Whitaker on July 2 1949 in Monroe. Together they built a life centered on faith family and hard work. Betty was employed at KMart in Customer Service when it first opened in 1966 and retired in 1991. She was known for her strong work ethic caring nature and devotion to those she loved. Betty also enjoyed spending time with her family and blessing them with her many sewing crocheting and crafting talents. Giving to her family and others brought Betty immense pride and joy.
