Barbara worked in retail services and later with the State of Nevada. She was known as a hard worker and for her dedication in supporting and assisting other departments. He graduated in 1967 from West High School in Salt Lake City and attended the University of Utah. He served in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve from 1968 to 1974. In 1971 he married the love of his life Susan Vallone Smith. They were happily married for 53 years until her passing in September 2024. Joe was a home builder by trade and moved his family to Las Vegas in 1987. In addition to being a general contractor he was also skilled at cabinetry and eventually owned his own swimming pool company.
