Murry “Gene” Eugene Hodges, surrounded by his loving family, passed peacefully into the Father’s House Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the age of 86; his final boat ride complete as he made his way home to be with Jesus.Born in Dunn, NC on February 6, 1940, to Murry E. and Grace Hodges, Gene was a sharp and fiery young man. One of his best qualities was his ability to make excellent decisions. He knew how to study a situation, weigh his options, and when to go all-in. The best decision he ever made was to marry his love, JoAnn, at 20 years old on December 28, 1960. They made their way to East Carolina University, where Gene was a member of Lambda Chi fraternity, ROTC, and would not have graduated without the assistance of JoAnn who is storied to have “helped” him complete his schoolwork. Francis Larry Overby, 81, of Linden, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Valley Hospice House in Fayetteville with family at his side after a long illness. Born on October 4, 1944, he was the son of the late Robert Curtis Overby and Mary Belle McDonald.Larry was a native of Aberdeen and joined the Navy at the age of 17. After his honorable discharge, he proudly continued to serve his country in the Army National Guard and Reserves, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant.In 1966, Larry began a distinguished career with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He served in Bertie, Pitt, Rowan and Wake Counties and also served on the staff of the Highway Patrol Training Center and Highway Patrol Headquarters. He established the Highway Patrol’s Explorer Post 29 where he mentored several young people who later entered law enforcement careers.Larry attained the rank of Captain…
