A deep man of faith immense creativity and unwavering patriotism Gene lived by the philosophy that imagination is the greatest force ever known to humankind.. He spent his life proving that with enough imagination one could build a life of both substance and magic. Genes journey of service began shortly after high school when he joined the United States Marine Corps. A proud veteran he served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War in the early 1960s. His time in the Marines remained a defining chapter of his life and lifelong source of pride. He called the Wollen Mills area home and could be found on the Rivanna River with his Granddad Baker from the young age of 3 fishing for Crappie. After graduating high school Ronnie served his country proudly in the USMC. After Honorable Discharge from USMC he moved to Mississippi to join the Electrical Union and raise two beautiful children. Herbert Dean Johns 83 of Winnie passed away Sunday March 29 2026. He was born April 4 1942 in Houston to Rosa Lee Falknor Johns and Ruby Lee Johns. Herbert graduated from Milby High School in 1960 and soon began his career with the United States Postal Service. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968 as a radar repairman. Following his military service he returned to the Postal Service where he dedicated many years before retiring as Postmaster in 1992. Never one to stop learning Herbert pursued a lifelong goal of higher education in his early 50s earning his teaching degree from Lamar University in 1999. He honorably served his country as a U.S. Army language specialist in Korea from 1957 to 1960 a role that reflected both his intellect and dedication. His work ethic integrity and commitment to his community defined his professional life.
