He was raised and educated in Fort Worth and graduated from Paschal High School in 1944. Bob volunteered as an aviation cadet in July 1944 with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II for training as a pilot bombardier or navigator. The Aviation Cadet Program was discontinued prior to his active duty in May 1945 when Germany surrendered. Instead he joined the United States Navy serving on the battleships U.S.S. West Virginia and U.S.S. Indiana during 1945 and 1946 in the Pacific. Bob graduated from Baylor University with a BBA in 1950.
