He was the owner of H & L Backhoe Service and was know for his strong work ethic, kind heart, and willingness to help others. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend to many.Per his wishes, no services will be held.

Hugh Lee Darnell, 90, of Orange County, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on May 12, 2026. Born on the Fourth of July in 1935, Hugh Lee — affectionately known to many as “Nubbins” or simply “Nub” — truly was a firecracker. His larger-than-life personality could light up any room, and there was never a dull moment when he was around.Hugh Lee was preceded in death by his father, George Lee Darnell, Jr.; his mother, Myrie Rosser Darnell; and his sister, Doris Jones.He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Barbara Brooks Darnell, whom he adored and reminded daily of his love for her. He is also survived by his daughter, Sharon Darnell Carpenter (Michael), and his son, Bradford Lee Darnell (Jamee).
