Marvin was born in Richmond the son of Samuel and Florence Self. He grew up in Ferry Farm and attended Stafford High School and James Monroe High School.He attended Virginia Tech and was a proud member of the HightyTighties Regimental Marching Band. He served in the U. S. Army 101st Airborne Division attaining the rank of Captain. His service included a tour in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive and a tour in demilitarized South Korea. Following the military he graduated from the University of Tennessee and later earned an MBA from the University of Mary Washington. Marvin loved to build things and spent most of his years in the construction industry either building or planning or selling. He leaves behind a legacy defined by a rare combination of distinguished military service and a gentle humble spirit that made him the cornerstone of his family. Born July 29 1928 in Alabama to Robert and Evie Johnson Isiah guided his life by his Lutheran faith and the belief that any job worth doing was worth giving his all.
