Barbara Varriale 86 a longtime resident of Cromwell and a native of the area passed away peacefully at home on March 4 2026 after a long illness. Born and raised in a hardworking Italian American household Barbara was the daughter of Lena and C. George Varriale formerly of Berlin. Pragmatic caring and deeply devoted to her family she spent much of her adult life as a valued employee of Rowland Products in Berlin. She is survived by her brother Jim Varriale her nephews Tom Witkewicz David Witkewicz and Max Varriale her greatniece and greatnephew Rachael and Adam Witkewicz and several cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved sister Rosemarie Witkewicz a Bristol teacher. His family fled when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. They hid in the woods during the day and walked at night crossing the nearly frozen Bug River on a farmers rickety pontoon bridge in darkness to reach the Soviet Union. There they were picked up by Soviet border troops and eventually taken by train with other Jewish refugees to the Ural Mountains.
