CARROLL ‘Harp’ PRENTICE HARPER was born on October 4, 1934, in Englewood, Colorado, to Prentice Harper and Lucille Elsie (Bearden) Harper. His mother passed away one week after his birth, leaving his father to raise him alone. Despite the challenges of his early years on Chicago's South Side, Harp developed the resilience, independence, curiosity and warmth that characterized his life.Harp attended several elementary schools and two years at Hyde Park High School. While still a student, he helped support the household through a newspaper route, summer jobs selling ice cream, and other temporary work. Outside of school and work, he spent his time exploring Chicago's neighborhoods, museums and parks, developing a lifelong appreciation for learning and culture.Although exempt from military service as an only child, Harp chose to enlist in the United States Army alongside many of his friends.
