Tom N. Shattuck, born November 29, 1935, died peacefully in his home on March 28, 2026. Tom was a high school athlete, graduating from Clinton High (Tennessee) in 1953. He received a mining engineering degree from Virginia Tech in 1957. Middlesboro has been his home since 1963. After many years in the coal business, he helped supervise the construction of the pilot tunnel that forged the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. In retirement, he became a tireless advocate for promoting Middlesboro, earning recognition from both the Bell County Tourism Commission and the Bell County Historical Society. He authored The Cumberland Gap Guidebook in 2004. In recent years he has enjoyed the many friends he made dining at Cracker Barrel.He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Keely; his brother, John and his sister, Sabra.He is survived by his sons: David and Pete; his siblings: Jerry and Penny; five grandchildren…
