He was born on March 4 1941 in Birch Run Michigan to the late Harry and Lorena Larson Layman. Donald grew up in Birch Run graduating from Birch Run High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Central Michigan University. Donalds career spanned more than 40 years in financial management. He initially worked for PanEx and later dedicated more than 25 years as the treasurer for Liggett Broadcasting until his retirement. Before retiring to his beloved Northern Michigan Donald resided in Okemos Michigan where he raised his family. Leona grew up in Brutus Michigan the daughter of Leo Richard Clark and Edith Mayle Clark. She attended Petoskey schools where she graduated in 1959. The same year in September 1959 she married Chief Petty Officer Jerry Paul Burrows making their home together in Harbor Springs. During her working life Leona dedicated her time as personal home care volunteer and later a nanny for a local doctors family her grace and compassion preceding her in both roles.
