Gastonia, North CarolinaKatherine Theodore Currence, 89, of Gastonia, devoted mother to Petey, Tina, and Chrisie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, at Covenant Village on Monday, August 17, 2026.Katherine was born in Greenville, SC on January 22, 1937, the daughter of Christine and Peter Theodore, who immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island without the benefit of speaking English. She described an idyllic childhood with her sister, Rebecca, in a neighborhood of other Greek immigrant families in downtown Greenville, who were devoted to their Greek Orthodox faith and shared the same traditions and family values. They all pulled together to help one another create fruitful lives in this wonderful country and in doing so, created bonds and relationships that would transcend generations. These childhood experiences fostered a natural instinct in Katherine, which fueled a curiosity to meet everyone around her and learn about their lives and their families.…

She was born October 5, 1947 in Gaston County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Virgil Lee Gilstrap and Grace Deanhardt Gilstrap. Sarah worked as an insurance agent for many years, building lasting relationships with those she served. She was a faithful member of Independent Baptist Tabernacle, where she deeply loved her church family and had a special heart for the youth. She also managed the funds that supported missionaries serving around the world, taking great joy in knowing she was helping share the Gospel beyond her own community.Sarah had a generous heart and loved showing kindness to others, especially through her baking.
