Wuhan was born on July 21, 1938, in Wuhan, China to Mengyu and Xilan Jiang during a major wartime migration. She was named after the name of the city (武汉), which brought her a character that she carried for her entire life: being strong. After graduating from Shanghai First Medical College, she worked as a pediatrician for 29 years and became a beloved and respected doctor and teacher. At 50 years old, Wuhan came to US and bravely built her American dream from scratch towards a wonderful and peaceful life for the next 30+ years.In North Carolina, Wuhan did research work at UNC hospitals until her retirement in 2007.Wuhan brought love to wherever she went, to her work, patients, students, and most importantly to her family. Dr. David Paul Kraines, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026 at his residence at the Forest at Duke Retirement Community. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Ruth Jaffe Kraines, PhD and Samuel Henry Kraines, MD. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kraines was also predeceased by his elder brother, Richard Lee Kraines, MD.David was a theoretical mathematician who lived inside his head most of the time. He knew early on that he wanted an academic career and eventually retired after 45 years as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Duke University. For more than 30 years he was the coach of the university’s competitive math team, and under his leadership the team frequently earned prizes in the prestigious Putnam Mathematical Competition, winning first prize among all US universities on three occasions.
