His favorite pastime by far was golf which he enjoyed since he was a young boy. Gary was a focused golfer with a quiet disposition and excelled as an individual and in team play winning a good many local golf tournaments over the years with four holeinones to his credit. Also a great mogul skier and participant in bowling leagues with his favored ball. Gary attended Whittier Elementary and Lincoln Jr. High School. As a South High Cub he lettered in football his sophomore year along with golf and wrestling all three years. He also played trumpet in Dance Band and was a cheerleader during his junior and senior years. When his brother Blaine razzed him about giving up football for cheerleading Gary answered by executing a surprise standing back flip on the spot.
