Fern Ellen Elswick Duty, age 88, of Grundy, Virginia, passed away Monday, March 30, 2026, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. Born February 16, 1938, in Vansant, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Taft and Flora Bailey Elswick.Fern was a devoted member of Poplar Creek Church of Christ. She was baptized on Mother’s Day, May 5, 1965, and remained a faithful Christian throughout her life. This past Mother’s Day, she proudly shared that she was the oldest member and longest-standing Christian in the congregation. Her faith was central to her life. She sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and lovingly served her church in many ways—organizing Thanksgiving gift cards for families in need, preparing fruit baskets for widows at Christmas, and helping care for the church building. Richard Duty, 74 years of age, of Hurley, VA, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at his residence. Born December 23, 1951, in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Arvil and Edna Estep Duty.Richard was the owner and operator of Duty Garage and Tire that he loved working in. He was always out and about, enjoyed buying and selling cars, trading and riding motorcycles. Richard loved his dogs and was a loving brother, uncle and friend to many and will be missed by many.In addition to his parents Arvil and Edna Duty, he is preceded in death by his brother Randel Duty.Survivors include his half-sister Renita Jayne Hess of Grundy, VA; nephew Randall Craig Duty of Cleveland, OH; niece Emily Willis and husband Jessee of Abingdon, VA; great niece Scarlett Willis; and several cousins and friends.A memorial service for Richard Duty will be held Saturday, April…
