Darlene Jean Symes a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls South Dakota passed away peacefully on April 1 2026 at the age of 95 surrounded by her family at the Dougherty Hospice House. Born in 1931 in Harrisburg to Luther and Mildred Hummel Prentice Darlene was a cherished presence across the many communities she was part of in Sioux Falls. A proud member of the VFW Auxiliary the Cooties and the Center for Active Generations she was always ready to lend a hand or brighten someones day. Darlenes quick wit and feisty spirit were part of what made her so special and she had a way of making people smileoften when they least expected it. Joyce Lynn Vander Lugt born August 30 1940 reached the end of her adventures on this earth on March 27 2026. She grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan where her parents Richard and Marie Dalebout surrounded her and her siblings with love and a caring extended Dutch family. Joyce attended Hope College in Holland Michigan where she met Karel in firstyear chemistry class. Her junior year she studied at the University of Edinburgh Scotland before graduating from Hope with a chemistry major. Subsequently she pursued a M.S. in medical technology from Wayne State University in Detroit. Joyce and Karel Vander Lugt married in 1964 and she did medical research while Karel completed his Ph.D. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1968 when Karel joined the faculty at Augustana University.
